Honey I’m Comb – Crochet Honeycomb Stitch Square

The Honey I’m Comb blanket square is sweet on texture! Crochet honeycomb stitch (also known as smock stitch) creates the squishy, diamond design across the center square. A single row of twisted clusters gives the clean, simple border a little pop of texture. With a repeating pattern that’s easy to memorize, this eye-catching square is fun to make and works equally well in one color or many.

Knit Picks Brava Worsted

Knit Picks/WeCrochet sent me some of their Brava Worsted yarn for this crochet honeycomb stitch pattern. It’s a soft and squishy, basic acrylic yarn that’s great for all kinds of projects. A while back, they had sent me one of their mini packs for a different project, which was a great way to see a lot of the colors. I used the Fairy Tale color from that mini pack, along with full-size skeins of Tidepool and Fig.

12 Years of Moogly Squares

It’s hard to believe, but this is my 12th year of participating in the Moogly Afghan CAL! That means, if I made 2 of each square, I’d have 24 squares – enough for a blanket!

I did make 2 of many of the squares, and I tried to find them all to put them together, but unfortunately some have gone missing. So here’s the next best thing – collage image of what it could look like.

Special Stitches

Spike Single Crochet (Spike sc)

Insert hook in indicated ch or st 3 rows below (see details below), yo and pull up a loop, pull loop up to height of current row, yo and pull through both loops on hook, skip st on current row behind spike sc just made.

Spike sc are worked on WS, forming large V-shaped legs on RS. These legs are joined together with the joining sc. 3 rows below means 3 rows below the current row you are making. For example, on Row 3, work spike sc into foundation chs. On Row 5, work them into the sts of row 2, etc.

Except on Row 3, when inserting your hook, check that it comes out at the back between V-shapes of spike stitches from previous rows (i.e., directly under a joining sc). If the spike stitch is the first or last st of the row, it should come out to the side of the adjacent V from previous rows.

Joining Single Crochet (join sc):

Working into V-shaped legs of spike sts, insert hook in 2nd leg of previous spike st and first leg of next spike st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops on hook, sk st on current row behind join sc.

Crossed Cluster (crcl):

Insert hook in first indicated st or sp, yo and pull up a loop, insert hook in next st or sp, yo and pull up a loop, insert hook in same st as first leg, yo (see note below) and pull up a loop, yo and pull through all 4 loops on hook.

Note: When working the yo for the last leg of a cr cl, because of the position of the working yarn, it feels almost like a yarn under. Simply grab the working yarn where it is and pull it through, do not wrap all the way around the hook again.

Instructions

Color changes as indicated will match multi-color sample and listed yardage. For a solid color square, simply ignore all color changes. Feel free to change colors as desired to create your own custom color scheme!

Honeycomb Stitch / Smock Stitch Center Square

Foundation: With A, ch 25

Row 1 (WS): Working in back bumps of chs, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. (24 sc).

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across, change to B.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, spike sc (see Special Stitches) in first ch/st 3 rows below, sc in next st on current row, [sk ch/st 3 rows below sc just made, spike sc in next ch/st 3 rows below, sc in next st on current row] across. (12 sc, 12 spike sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 2 sts, [join sc (see Special Stitches), sc in next st] across. (13 sc, 11 join sc)

Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, sk st 3 rows below sc just made, spike sc in next st 3 rows below, [sc in next st on current row, sk st 3 rows below sc just made, spike sc in next st 3 rows below] across. (12 sc, 12 spike sc)

Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, [join sc, sc in next st] across to last st, sc in last st, change to A. (13 sc, 11 join sc)

Rows 7-10: With A, rep rows 3-6. At end of row 10, change to B.

Rows 11-34: [Rep Rows 3-10] 3 times (see note below), do not change colors at end of last row, fasten off B.

Center Square should now measure approximately the same in length and width. If needed, work more or fewer repeats of rows 3-10, ending after any RS row, so that Center comes out as close to square as possible. When finished, change (if necessary) to A and fasten off B.

Rnd 1 (RS): With A, ch 3 (counts as ch-2 sp), do not turn, working across side edge, 24 sc evenly spaced across to bottom corner, ch 2, sc in bottom of each st across, ch 2, working along side edge, 24 sc across to top corner, ch 2, sc in each st across, join with sl st to beginning ch-2 sp. (96 sc, 4 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 2: With A, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in first ch-2 sp, *sc in each st to next ch-2 sp**, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around ending at ** on last rep, join with sl st to first st, sl st in first ch-2 sp and change to C. (104 sc, 4 ch-2 sps)

Size Notes: After rnd 5, work should measure 12″ square. To make Square smaller, sk rnds 3, 4, and/or 5 as desired. To make Square larger, repeat Rnds 3, 4, and/or 5 as desired. You can also work hdc instead of sc on Rnds 4 and/or 5. End after a plain sc or hdc rnd; do not end after a repeat of Rnd 3. Sk final sl st on last rnd worked if desired.

Rnd 3: With C, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in first ch-2 sp, [(ch 1, crcl in next 2 sts) to next ch-2 sp, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, (ch 1, crcl in next 2 sts) around, join with sl st to first sc, sl st in next ch-2 sp and change to A. (8 sc, 104 crcl, 4 ch-2 sps)

Rnds 4 & 5: With A, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in first ch-2 sp, [sc in each st and each ch-1 sp to next ch-2 sp, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, sc in each st and each ch-1 sp around, join with sl st to first st, sl st in first ch-2 sp. (128 sc, 4 ch-2 sps)

Fasten off. Weave in all ends. Wash and block.
