GBI Storage Box Review on Stitches n Scraps

Earlier this year, Global Backyard Industries had given me some of their adjustable storage boxes to try out and review. I decided to use them as “grab and go” crafting kits, and took them with me on all my travels this summer. You may remember this video I posted on Facebook.

I promised to tell you all about my experience with these boxes after all my summer travels. Here’s how it turned out:

Travelling

One of the things I love most about these storage boxes is the size and shape. They’re big enough to hold what I need, but small enough to be easy to carry along wherever I go.

We’ve all seen other, similar storage boxes, but these ones just fit everywhere. They fit nicely in the outside pocket of my carry on – I actually could have fit 2, but needed the space for other stuff. I carried one in my purse all through the TNNA summer trade show.

They also fit really nicely in my project bags, my glove box, and the outside pocket of my spinning wheel bag. Wherever I needed to take them, they fit!

I took a 2 day, cross-country train ride to the CGOA Chain Link conference. It was an amazing experience and my travel kit was indispensable. Whether I was working on the fold out table or on the bed, it kept all the little bits from getting lost.

Class kit

At both of the fiber related conferences, I was taking a couple of classes. I packed everything I would need for all the classes into one kit. This included supplies, hooks, fees, phone chargers and more. A nail file turned out to be important in all my boxes so I could deal with any little chips or breaks before they snagged yarn.

Things get so rushed during a conference, it’s great to have everything in one place. When I headed to class, I didn’t even have to think – I just grabbed my class kit and left.

Having all the little extras with me everywhere really helped out – not just for me, but for my friends too. For example, in class one day a friend needed to borrow my charger, and I had it right there without having to dig through my bag.

Fashion show

This year at the Chain Link conference, I was organizing the fashion show (backstage). I packed an emergency kit with safety pins, needles and thread, and yarn needles for last minute repairs or loose ends. Luckily none of that was necessary. What we did end up using was the 2 shawl pins I brought. They both fit perfectly and I’m so glad I had them with me.

Down time

At conferences there are always small bits of downtime, when random crafting happens. This was particularly true at GenCon (a gaming convention), where I found myself occasionally waiting between games.

Of course I had a project and handy kit with me to fill the gaps. It even came in handy for a game once, when no one had a pen to tabulate the scores. I did, and I still think I should have gotten bonus points for that.

I was working on 2 small projects while I was at TNNA, with Lion Brand Bonbons yarn (which I received free for one of the projects). So I made myself a “beads and Bonbons kit.” I loved how much yarn I could fit into one little box.

I was going to do something with the beads, but ended up not liking it with the thicker yarn. That project eventually turned into my A Simple Twist set.

Other uses

My original intent was to use these storage boxes just for the conferences, but they were so much more useful than that! I found pretty much everywhere I went, these were a great way to carry whatever I needed.

When I went to an outdoor concert, the storage box helped keep my cable knitting notions all clean and neat – no stitch markers or cable needles lost in the grass. I also packed a box for a spinning retreat, with all the essentials plus a few scraps of yarn for skein ties.

I even keep a teaching box ready to go for whenever I need to teach a class – the only thing I need to add each time is fresh chocolate.

Wear and tear

These storage boxes have become such a staple crafting item for me that I’m almost never without one when I leave the house. In all of the carrying (and throwing) around, shoving into bags, and dropping on floors, they’ve held up really well.

I did manage to put a crack in one, because breaking things is one of my super powers. I accidentally stepped on it, with all my weight, right at the corner. I’m really glad it has rounded corners, by the way, or that could have hurt a lot. Amazingly, it’s just a small crack and still completely useable!
