Earlier this year, Stencil Revolution sent me a free stencil to try out and review. I decided to use it to decorate a canvas tote bag, but wasn’t sure what paint or medium to use. Then I got a free sample of Deco Foil from Thermoweb and it turned out to be the perfect combination.
Keep reading for my review of both products and a tutorial for the tote bag project. Plus, enter the giveaway below for a chance to win some to try out yourself!
Stencil Revolution Stencils
Stenciling is something I’ve only done occasionally, and I can’t actually remember the last time. So when
Stencil Revolution reached out about doing a review, I wasn’t sure. But then I saw this crochet design on their site and fell in love.
Stencil Revolution is a small, family run business that makes their own stencils. They have all sorts of different designs, most of which are available in a wide range of sizes. I really loved some of the mandala stencils. The larger, wall stencils look like fun for painting a room too.
The stencil I chose has a lot of fine lines, particularly at the 8.5 x 11 inch size I needed. I was concerned that those lines may not be cut cleanly, or may not hold up to applying the glue. But there was no need to worry. The laser cutting was precise, and the stencil worked perfectly with the glue.
Isn’t that perfect? The material of the stencil was nice too – thicker than I expected, flexible, and washed up easily. Next time I need a stencil, I’ll be sure to check with Stencil Revolution!
Deco Foil
One of my goals at the Creativation trade show was to find a paint or medium I would like to use with my stencil, and I did come home with a couple of ideas. But then I went through all the free samples I had received in my goodie bag, and I found this tube of Deco Foil.
I had not visited the Thermoweb booth at the show, and I had no clue what Deco Foil was. When I looked it up, I discovered it’s basically magic. (Ok, not really, but it’s SO cool!) It’s shiny, colorful foil that you can transfer on to paper or fabric projects in intricate designs, using special glues.
The glue goes on white, then dries clear and sticky. Once it’s dry, press the foil sheets onto it and then peel them away. Wherever there is glue, the foil sticks to it. Everywhere else, it peels away cleanly.
There are several different adhesive options. The tube I got came with a pen, which you can draw or write with, but it’s recommended for paper projects. I believe the inclusion of the pen was just for the conference goody bag. From what I can tell the tubes of foil do not normally come with a glue pen.
For this project, ThermOWeb sent me a free sample of their liquid adhesive, which they said would be better on the fabric. They also have a spray adhesive and hot melt adhesive that will both work on fabric, but I have not tried those.
It’s simple to apply the foil, and the liquid glue works wonderfully with a stencil. The tube has 5 sheets in it, which will go a long way. As you’ll see in the tutorial, I only used two for this stencil design. I saved my used sheets too, because I can use the leftover, unused areas later for smaller designs.

I’ve wanted to try stenciling. I think I’d like to try putting it on a tote and to make a wall hanging with it. I’m sure I could think of other things to stencil too.

Looks like easy to use products. Not sure what I would make, but a big ladybug with my sisters favorite saying on something keeps popping into my mind.
