Free Pattern – Last Minute 4th of July Headband
Do you need a last minute accessory for tonight’s festivities? There’s still time! I waited until the last minute too, and this headband is what I came up with. This design combines 2 of my previous patterns with a simple red chain. It only uses basic stitches, but combines knitting and crochet. This is a great project for a beginning knitter with a little bit of crochet experience. This pattern is protected by copyright. Product Review – Susan Bates Digital Row Counter
As you may remember, I recently received a package of free items to review, from Red Heart. Included in the package was a Susan Bates digital row counter. This is a brand new product for 2015 (UPDATE: it’s now available on Red Heart’s site and I have updated the links in this post!). I’m not typically a big fan of row counters, but this one looked intriguing and I wanted to give it a try. I was at my LYS yesterday evening, knitting on my current pair of socks, and it seemed like a good opportunity. In the past, I’ve used the type of manual row counters where you turn the dials on…

A package from Red Heart!
Look at the free goodies the postman brought me the other day, from the lovely people at Red Heart! There’s a skein of Boutique Twilight in the “Romantic” colorway, and a coordinating skein of Boutique Infinity in the “Enchanted” colorway. Hmm…an enchanted romance indeed! They’re both generous skeins in gorgeous shades of purple, and both with a subtle sparkle. They’re surprisingly soft and silky to work with too. I can’t wait to make something with them. I have a couple ideas in mind but we’ll have to see how they turn out! Also in the box was a Susan Bates digital row counter (also in purple, of course). It wraps around…

Kids Sweaters for Charity Projects
This summer, my LYS will be doing a charity project involving sweaters and cardigans for children. As a resource for that project, I have made this list of free sweater patterns that I think would be great for charity. I have tried to include knit and crochet patterns in varying baby and children’s sizes. Some of the patterns are really basic and great for beginners, while others are just complicated enough to keep an intermediate level crafter interested, without taking forever to make. I looked for patterns that use DK or worsted weight yarns, and without too much tight shaping so they are likely to fit a growing child for some time.…

Types of sleeves
Sleeves have always intimidated me. I never really made anything with sleeves until fairly recently, except a few baby sweaters with very basic sleeves. As I started branching out though, I got more familiar with some of the different types and found that they all have their pros and cons and all add their own distinctive feel to a sweater design. Here are a few of those sleeve types, and some sweaters I love which illustrate them. Most of these sweaters are from KT & the Squid, I’m a little hooked on her designs right now. Drop Shoulder The easiest sleeve I’ve come across is the drop shoulder sleeve. If you do not add any sleeve shaping…

Pattern Review – Knitapotamus by Heidi Bears
I’ve had my eye on Heidi Bears’ crochet patterns for a while now. It’s so creative, the way she takes all different regular polygons and magically creates wonderful creatures with them. But at $6.50 each, I always hesitated to try one. I didn’t really have any NEED for a stuffed dragon, after all… 4 of my friends are having babies this year. I was browsing through Ravelry hoping to find inspiration to create some new, fun baby designs, when instead I stumbled upon the Knitapotamus. This is the knit version of Heidi’s Happypotamus, and appears to be the first knit version of one of her polygon motif animals. I could…

Making the most of your Ravelry project pages
Have you ever started a project, put it down for a while, and then forgotten which hook you used, where you put the pattern, or what your stitch count was supposed to be at some particular point? I do it all the time! That’s why I now try to use the notebook features on Ravelry as much as possible, to keep track of all my projects. I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not always the best at keeping up with it. When I do though, I’ve found it to be a great resource and time saver. For example, take a look at a project I just finished – my…
