Spread the joy of crafting this holiday season with a Mini Maker Kit! Leisure Arts sent me a few of these new kits to try out and review. I’m not generally much of a painter, and this Paint Pouring kit was my first time ever trying the technique. This easy project kit would make a fantastic holiday gift, but fair warning…it’s addictive!

What’s in the Paint Pouring Kit
Canvas
The Mini Maker Kit includes 2 squares of canvas, mounted on wood frames. They can easily be hung on a nail or hook, without any further framing needed.
Since this is something I’d never done before, I was really afraid I would mess it up. Having 2 canvases put me more at ease, because I could have a practice piece if I needed it! As it turns out, I didn’t need it.

Paint
Of course you can’t paint without paint, and this kit includes plenty of it! There was white, blue, yellow, and a purplish red. All the colors were pre-mixed with pouring medium, so no mixing was required.
There was a little instruction sheet about thinning the white paint with a bit of water, which was helpful. My bottle of yellow paint was a bit thick too, so I wish I had thinned that as well. But it still worked out just fine.
Gloves
There are two pairs of disposable gloves included. These were very helpful! I found them large enough to fit comfortably, and thin enough that they didn’t get in the way.
Paintbrush
In the instructions, the paintbrush is mostly for helping to move paint around over the edges. However, you can do the same thing with the stir stick or even your fingers. I didn’t find it particularly necessary for my project, but I didn’t try all the techniques, so it may be more useful for those.
Instruction booklet
The booklet that comes with this Mini Maker Kit is full of instructions for different types of paint pouring techniques. The kit includes supplies for the “dirty drag” technique. Additional supplies may be needed for the other techniques.
It also includes instructions on how to mix acrylic paints for pouring, so you can use any regular acrylic paint for your projects!

What’s not included
To complete your first painting, you will need a few other items not included in the kit.
Work Surface
The paint is washable. I got some white paint on my black shirt, and it washed off just fine. However, you will still want something to protect your work surface. I used a casserole pan with high sides to prevent any drips, and lined it with foil for easy clean up.

Keep in mind that the painting will need to dry in place for at least a day. If you accidentally use the pan that you need for dinner that night, you will have the nerve wracking experience of trying to move your painting off the pan while it’s wet. This is not fun. I managed to lift up the foil without disturbing the painting, and placed the whole arrangement on the box to dry.

Raised stand
You also need something to raise your painting off the work surface. The book recommends plastic cups. I chose to use a random cardboard box that was nearby. That was a mistake – the paint, when it dried, stuck to the cardboard to the point that it actually damaged the back of the canvas.

Make sure whatever you use is plastic, or coat it with plastic wrap, so that the painting can be removed easily later. The book suggests covering the back of the canvas with painters tape for a cleaner finish.
Stir stick
Popsicle sticks work. Or if you’re like me and don’t have popsicle sticks, a plastic knife works too. You may need several if you are mixing or thinning several colors separately.
Mixing cups
The book recommends small plastic cups for mixing. I used one, for thinning the white paint, but I cheated on the rest. Since the paint was already pre-mixed, I mostly poured it straight from the bottle.
Pouring the paint
I did not use the dirty drag technique that the kit was designed for. I was much more intrigued by a couple of the other techniques (direct pour and dirty pour) and I used a combination of those.
Where I wanted to mix colors, I did it directly on the canvas instead of using a cup. I actually added paint in 2 or 3 batches, experimenting with techniques.
Watching the paint swirl around was totally addictive. I think the hardest part for me was stopping. Luckily, I have plenty of leftover paint, and another blank canvas to play with!

I think you’ll enjoy this Paint Pouring Mini Maker Kit, and there are lots more to try as well! Most of them do not include full booklets like this one, but there are 4 that do. Check out my review of the Felt Flower Wreath Kit – there’s a giveaway with that one as well! The Unicorn kit has felt flowers too, and there’s also a Knit Hat Kit kit that I will be reviewing soon.

These kits look super interesting but I’ve never been confident in painting, but would love to try it.
