What’s in the Mini Maker Kit

Contents of the Felt Flowers Mini Makers Kit - Felt pieces, embroidery hoop, embroidery floss, and instruction booklet

Felt flowers

The Mini Maker Kit includes several pre-cut felt pieces to make the flowers. There are rectangles with slits in them that become mums, scalloped strips that become roses, and smaller strips and petals in a little bag that become pansies.

My box included more pieces than were needed for the flower wreath design. I think I might make a magnet or pin out of one or two of the extras.

Embroidery supplies

The kit also includes a 6 inch hoop and sheet of black felt. These make the background of the design. There is also a small amount of embroidery floss and needle for embroidering the wording.

I haven’t worked with felt in an embroidery hoop before. I found I needed to be more careful with it than with regular cross stitch fabric. Stretching it too much can make thin spots or even tear it. It should be comfortably taught, but not overstretched.

Instruction booklet

The booklet that comes with this Mini Maker Kit is more than just instructions for making the flower wreath. It’s a full introduction to crafting with felt, including templates, tips, techniques and ideas.

There are instructions for 5 other projects as well! The kit is specifically for making the felt flower wreath though, so these other designs do require additional materials.

What’s not included

To complete the felt flower wreath, you will need a few other items not included in the kit. If you are giving this Mini Maker Kit as a gift, I recommend including a piece of chalk with it, and maybe even some glue, depending on the recipient.

Glue

You will need glue to form and attach your flowers. The instructions recommend hot glue, which would probably have worked really well. I’ve never been great at following instructions though. I actually didn’t notice this in the instructions until after I finished.

I first tried regular, white, school glue, which did not work at all. A while back, I had received some Supertite Multi Grab 360 in a goodie bag at a conference. I decided to try that instead, and it worked perfectly.

White chalk

Unless you’re amazing at freehand embroidery, you will need to draw your words onto the felt first. The instructions recommend a piece of chalk, but believe it or not I don’t actually have one! When we moved this summer, I got rid of all my bits of chalk.

I tried using a water soluble fabric pencil instead, and it worked well enough, but I don’t recommend it. To leave a mark, I had to press so hard that it started to damage the felt. In the end, the mark was faint, but I could see it well enough to embroider over. Chalk would have definitely been better.

Scissors

There’s surprisingly little cutting involved. You will need to cut your threads from the embroidery, and trim the felt back from around the edge of the embroidery hoop.

Making the Wreath

The whole project took me about an hour, and that’s mainly because I was stopping to photograph it and messing with different glues. Without that, it would have taken maybe half an hour.

There’s a lot of room for creativity. You can arrange the flowers however you like, and since there are extras, you can even use a different combination of flowers. You can also change the embroidery.

In the book, the wreath says “Hello”, and has little stars embroidered on it. I changed that to say “Bloom”, and I spread my flowers out a bit more instead of making stars.

I think you’ll enjoy this Mini Maker Kit, and there are lots more to try as well! Most of them do not include full booklets like this one, but there are 4 that do. The Unicorn kit has felt flowers like this one. There’s also a Knit Hat Kit and a Paint Pouring Kit, both of which I will be trying and reviewing soon.
