What’s in the Knit Hat Kit
Yarn
This Mini Maker Kit includes 5 colors of yarn. There is dark and light gray, dark and light pink, and ivory. Each ball has a different amount, which was more than enough to make the striped hat.
The yarn is listed as a medium weight (#4). As far as yarn weights go, #4 is actually a range that spans from lighter, worsted yarns to heavier aran yarns. This one definitely falls on the lighter end of that range.
Needles
Size 8 (5mm), plastic knitting needles are included, as well as a plastic yarn needle for weaving in ends. The knitting needles are grey and the yarn needle is pink, so they actually match the hat! I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but I thought it was cute.
Pom-pom Maker
The pom-pom maker included in the kit is a round piece of cardboard with a slit cut in it. I actually haven’t used this kind before, but found it easy to use, and probably more beginner-friendly than fancier varieties. It made a nicely shaped pom-pom, just the right size for the hat.

Instruction booklet
The booklet that comes with this Mini Maker Kit has 5 hat patterns. The kit includes everything needed to make the striped hat. You would need different quantities or colors of yarn to make any of the other hats.
It also includes general instructions for knitting, seaming, and making the pom pom. These are very thorough, showing the many different techniques used in all 5 patterns. The only thing I found missing was instructions for casting on. See my notes on knitting the hat for more on this.

What’s not included
The only thing I needed that wasn’t in the kit was a pair of scissors to cut the yarn. If you give this as a gift to a new crafter, consider including a small pair of sharp scissors. A smaller pair works nicely for cutting the pom pom.
Knitting the hat
The book does not indicate what cast on to use, or have an instructions for casting on. For my hat, I used the alternating cable cast on. This is a nice cast on for ribbing or seed stitch, as it alternates between knit and purl stitches. See this tutorial for more information.
Other than that, I found the pattern easy and straightforward. The hat came out really cute! There’s plenty of extra yarn to work a gauge swatch, particularly the dark gray, so you can get the sizing just right.
There’s even enough extra yarn to play around a bit with the striping pattern. I used a bit more of the pink and white in my hat than the pattern did, and still had enough left over for another row or two. The pom-pom used up all the leftover dark pink, and came out very fluffy.
With a long cast on, ribbing, and decreases, this kit probably isn’t ideal for someone who has never picked up knitting needles before. However, after learning the basics of the knit and purl stitches, this would be a great first project kit!
The clear instructions and illustrations are a good refresher, and the additional patterns provide lots of scope for expanding skills as well.

My favorite pompom maker to be honest, is Boye Pompom maker. I haven’t tried to use the Leisure Pompom maker but I honestly find the previous one I started and haven’t needed to find a new one.
