Discover Jelly Yarn

This unique yarn isn’t fiber at all! It’s a vinyl filament. It looks a bit like the filament used in a 3-D printer, though it’s a different material. It’s sturdy, waterproof, and some of the colors even glow!

Jelly yarn fine

I bought this skein years ago, and the “Sparkle Jelly” line is no longer available. The current Raspberry Sorbet color (as of writing this) is the same color but without the sparkles.

Crocheting with Jelly Yarn

Jelly yarn is stiffer than traditional yarn. It feels somewhere between crocheting with yarn and crocheting with wire. It’s smooth, but not overly slippery. The filament doesn’t fold as tightly on itself as fiber does, so the stitches feel a bit more open. I found it a little harder on the hands, and I had to take breaks, but it was worth it for the finished product!

Where to Buy Jelly Yarn

I originally bought this yarn at a conference from Designing Vashti. She carries the complete line of Jelly yarns on her site, DesigningVashti.com.

Available Jelly Yarn Weights

Jelly yarn comes in 3 weights: bulky, fine, and super fine. This pattern is written for fine-weight, but you could substitute the other weights for a smaller or larger bowl. Keep in mind, you will need more yardage if using the bulky weight.

Materials

  • Yarn: 1 ball Yummy Yarns Jelly Yarn Fine – 100% vinyl, sport weight yarn (85 yds / 7 oz / 200 g per ball), shown in Raspberry Sorbet (see note below)
  • Hook: Size H/ 5 mm crochet hook or size needed to match gauge.
  • Notions:
    • Scissors
    • Stitch Marker
    • Tapestry Needle

Note: The sample is shown in a discontinued “Sparkle Jelly” line. The currently available Raspberry Sorbet is the same color but without the sparkles.

Project Level

Easy: Single crochet in the round with increases. Working in back loop only. Working into rows below.

Diameter: 6 inches / 15 cm

Gauge

21 sc x 24 rnds = 5.5 inches / 13.5 cm. Exact gauge is not critical but will affect yardage needed.

After Rnd 8, work should measure approximately 4″ / 10 cm in diameter.
