CGOA NOW!
If you’ve read my posts about the Knit and Crochet show and the CGOA Masters Program, you know that the Crochet Guild of America (CGOA) is an invaluable resource for any crochet professional. But did you know membership also has a lot to offer hobby crocheters too? No matter your skill level or the place crochet has in your life, the CGOA is for you!
As a hobbyist, the guild has more to offer than you may realize! For starters, it includes an annual subscription to Crochet! magazine, and some great discounts at several national retailers. If you go to the Knit and Crochet show, you can take advantage of an amazing array of classes and workshops, and the discounts you receive there will more than pay for your membership.
Not up for the travel? That’s ok! There are local guild chapters in many areas. The one I’m in (Northern Illinois Chapter) has monthly meetings, workshops, classes, charity programs, community outreach programs, an annual retreat, and of course a lot of fun! The CGOA is also active on social media. There’s the CGOA NOW! blog, a facebook page, a facebook group for guild crochet alongs, and a Ravelry group. The CGOA website includes a message board for members, and access to some members-only patterns as well. In the Across the Board CAL, which has just started, we’ll be working through an e-book of designs from CGOA board members, which combine to form a lovely blanket!
For crochet professionals, the CGOA offers unparalleled networking opportunities. Most if not all of the who’s who in this industry (at least in the US) are in the guild, and if you participate enough, you’ll meet them. There are many different ways to volunteer and help our community and our craft grow. You can also hone your skills and earn a certification through the Masters Program, and show off your work in the annual design competition. Retailers can get additional discounts and benefits as well.
Membership in the CGOA is ultimately what you make of it. There are tremendous opportunities to participate and interact with other members, and some great resources for all crocheters. Joining is easy – just visit the CGOA website and click “Join Today!”
