Materials

This month, we are working on the Rose Bud Tea Cozy by Debi Dearest. I managed to stick almost entirely to stash yarns for this project!

Yarns I used in my February tea cozy

For the main color, I have Lion Brand Pound of Love in Antique White. I chose Caron Simply Soft in Dark Sage for the leaves. I did buy this one, but this is one of my go-to yarns, so I’m sure I’ll use it up.

Finally, I have a nameless red yarn for the roses. I have no idea what it is, but the texture seems similar to the simply soft and it’s just the right color. The dominant color in my kitchen (and my teapot) is red, so I decided to stick with only red roses.

Check Your Gauge

The pattern calls for DK weight yarn, and all my chosen yarns are worsted weight. Changing yarn weights is ok, but it makes it even more important to check your gauge.

I didn’t have the size 7 hook that the pattern called for, so I’ll be using a size G/6 (4.25mm) instead. I did a gauge swatch that was 14 stitches wide and it came out just right at 4 inches.

February Pattern Tips

Foundation single crochet

I started my cozy with a foundation single crochet row instead of working into a chain. I fell in love with the technique when I saw the tutorial on Moogly,  and I’ve used it whenever possible since then. It creates a more even, prettier edge than a starting chain would.

Making the rose buds

Each rose bud in this tea cozy is a 5 hdc popcorn-style cluster. First, make 5 hdc. Then pull up the working loop and remove your hook.

Draw up a loop

Now insert your hook into the first hdc and then back into the working loop.

Then just pull the working loop through and pull tight to close:
