Normally, color changes in garter stitch need to be worked on the right side of the fabric in order to get a clean line. With this square, a simple shift in the garter stitch pattern allows the stripes to be worked neatly out from the center, in alternating directions.

They also remind me of the raised bumps used in braille. This 12 inch blanket square uses bobbles to spell out the word "Love", in both braille and English versions!
