I received this set of Plastic Handle, Aluminum Crochet Hooks from CrochetCreation, just before I left for the Knit and Crochet Show in Charleston. It was perfect timing, as I was able to take this set along with me and try it out while I was there.

Heads

To me the most important part of any hook is the head. This set has tapered heads (Boye style), which I much prefer to the in-line (Susan Bates style) heads. It’s a matter of personal preference, but I find the tapered shape easier to work with.

Types of heads - Product Review - Plastic Handle Aluminum Crochet HooksThe head on this one was actually a little smaller than a Boye hook. Here is the 5.5 mm hook from this set, next to a Boye hook of the same size.  I do like the smaller head as it’s easier to get into the stitches.

The set includes 8 sizes, in 0.5mm increments, from 2.5mm to 6mm.  The hooks are labelled with the size in mm, and the corresponding US number size, but not the US letter size.  I find the US number and letter sizes confusing and not always consistent, so I much prefer to go by the mm size anyway.

Handles

I found the ergonomic shape of the handle to be comfortable. The hooks were also lighter than most, because the metal part does not go all the way down. The metal hook part extends only about an 1 inch into the handle. One thing I did not like about the hooks was the feel of the handle, but this is again one of those personal preference things. These handles were firm, smooth, plastic. I like a softer, more rubberized handle, as it feels more secure in my hand. I know a lot of people who much prefer the smooth plastic handle though, because they feel the rubberized ones are too “grippy”.

Price

The price point of these hooks is very attractive. As of the time of writing this, the entire set costs about as much (or less) than one hook from some of the other brands of ergonomic handled hooks. I won’t say this is my favorite set ever, but at this price point I wouldn’t expect it to be. When I travel, I don’t like to take very expensive hooks because I’m so afraid of losing them. I used to take my plain, aluminum hooks without the ergonomic handles – that was actually my very first set! These will likely replace those as my go-to travel set. They’re more comfortable, but I can still replace them easily if anything were to happen to them.
