Word of Mouth

I went to Seattle to visit family. While planning the trip, I kept hearing about this local yarn shop (LYS) that I had to visit.

First, someone at my home LYS told me about it. Then, just a few days later, I found out that an acquaintance from the Socks with Sarah Ravelry group works there. With the prospect of meeting her in real life, how could I resist?

I did get to meet her, and the shop was everything I had hoped. Even my husband liked it!

A Hidden Gem

Churchmouse Yarns and Teas sits on a charming island, about 30 minutes away from Seattle by ferry. Bainbridge Island is beautiful to walk through, with lots of little shops and restaurants.

The ferry ride itself was scenic and relaxing. It was a lovely day trip for the whole family.

Spouse Friendly

Many of us have spouses who tolerate but do not share our yarn obsessions. Outside the store, there was a lovely, sunny courtyard where my husband could wait for me.

Looking at samples at Churchmouse

He did eventually come in, and was impressed by the layout of the store. In particular, he liked all the sample swatches and finished items on display. As he pointed out, seeing how each yarn can be used makes it easier for someone who is not a fiber artist to choose a gift for someone who is.

So Much to See

There were lots of little nooks and niches to explore, and interesting displays all around. I liked these beads and mohair yarns displayed in cute planters.

In the middle of the store, there was a large bookshelf, full of patterns on both sides. All the inspiration you need for your next project!

Near the checkout, this adorable display of teacups held a wide array of buttons.

More Than Yarn

Speaking of tea, there was a good selection of teas and tea-related items at the back of the store. I found several custom blends, made exclusively for Churchmouse Yarns and Teas!

The shop also had a separate embroidery section with lovely patterns and materials.

A Popular Destination

Churchmouse Yarns and Teas gets a lot of foot traffic. I was surprised to see how busy it was on a sunny Monday morning. There were many shoppers browsing, and several people busy at the work table.

Even with all the activity, the staff was pleasant and very helpful. I intended to buy just one or two skeins, but I ended up with a little more than that.

Shopping Spree

I chose Misti Alpaca sock yarn in the Eifel colorway, Regia Snowflake Color in Icicle, and 2 balls of Knitcol Trends in shades of blue and grey.

My purchases at the store

The 2 little bobbins are Regia 2-ply yarn. This is used for reinforcing toes and heels on socks. Everyone has been talking about it recently on the Socks with Sarah Ravelry group.

I also got a yarn cutter pendant and some Scottish breakfast tea. There was one more item that is not pictured. I can’t show it to you because it’s a gift for someone.

Have It Shipped

It was more than I expected to buy, and I wasn’t sure how to pack it all, particularly the gift item. The helpful Churchmouse Yarns and Teas staff came to the rescue. For a low flat fee, they shipped it home for me.

It arrived the day after I got home, carefully and neatly packed, with a nice handwritten thank you note on top. It was such a nice welcome home!

Though I couldn’t spend a lot of time, this visit was one of the highlights of my trip. If you’re going to be in the Seattle area, Bainbridge Island and Churchmouse Yarns and Teas should definitely be on your must-do list.
