Loving lover’s knots!

Have you heard of lover’s knots or Solomon’s knots in crochet? I’ve been coming across them a lot recently, and decided to try them out. I’m officially in love.

Basically, this stitch is made with very long chains and single crochets. You can adjust the size of the chains to get the look you want, though the key is consistency within a project. This great video tutorial got me started, and then I picked up some stash yarn and started playing. Here’s how far I got last night:

My first lovers knot wip

I love how quickly it works up – the stitches are so big and open. Once you get the hang of it, you can work a large swatch in no time at all. This particular yarn is pretty springy, but I think it will open up and look really nice once it’s blocked. I’m making a simple, rectangular shawl to wear at the knit and crochet show next month. I might put a border of some kind on it once it’s done – maybe just a basic sc row, so as not to detract from the stitch pattern.

I’ve also been practicing with increasing and decreasing within the lover’s knots. I have another pattern idea in mind using this stitch, but with increases and/or decreases. Thanks to a friend at my LYS group last night, I think I may finally have it figured out! We’ll have to wait and see.
