The Jake’s Blankie CAL on Jessie at Home has just started, and I’m going to be crocheting along. Take a look at my first 2 squares, then join in the fun!

I love the multi-colored square the most, but the blanket also needs solid-colored squares for balance. If the blanket was all 2-colored squares it would feel too “noisy”.
Learning Jacob’s Ladders
Jacob’s ladders are a fun and easy way to make bold, chunky cables. This crochet along is my first time seeing this stitch, so it took me a minute to figure out how the square came together. After the first one, and trusting the pattern, it all made sense. Crocheting along with events like this is always a great way to learn new skills!
My ladders are a little tight because I tend to chain too tightly. To correct this, I will likely add one extra chain in each loop for future squares.
Stash Busting
My initial reason for joining this crochet along was to use up some of my economy yarn stash. So I planned to make it in lots of different, random colors. When I actually looked at my stash, I found enough in just these 3 colors to make the whole blanket!
It’s a thicker yarn than the crochet-along calls for, and I’m using a larger hook. So the squares are much bigger than the pattern specifies.
My squares are about 8.5 inches, whereas the pattern is for 6-inch squares. This means I can get a larger blanket, without needing to make extra squares or changing the layout.
