Sewn Tubular Bind Off in the Round

The sewn tubular bind off is my absolute favorite for 1/1 (knit/purl) ribbing. This sewn bind-off is very similar to working a kitchener stitch, as though the knits were on one side and the purls on the other. It creates a stretchy edge that looks like the ribbing has just flowed right over it. When working this bind-off in the round, I do it a little bit differently from most tutorials I have seen. I find this way gives me a more seamless join at the end of the round.

How to Work the Sewn Tubular Bind Off in the Round

(scroll down for video tutorial)

Start by cutting the tail to about 3 or 4 times the circumference of your edge and thread it onto a tapestry or yarn needle. If you’re working on something big, like a sweater hem, this can become way too long to work with easily. In that case, cut a smaller tail that you can work with, but you may need to weave in another piece of yarn later to finish your bind off.

Set Up

Make sure the first stitch on your knitting needle is a knit. If it’s not, move that stitch over to the end of the round and start with the first knit stitch. Insert your tapestry needle into the first knit stitch as if to knit, and then pull it through. For the first stitch of the round ONLY, move this knit stitch onto the right hand needle so it becomes the last stitch of the round.

Skip the next purl stitch, insert your needle purlwise into the next knit stitch, and pull through.

Insert purlwise - Tubular Bind Off tutorial on StitchesNScraps.com

Go back to that purl stitch you skipped, and insert the needle purlwise into that stitch. For the first purl stitch of the round ONLY, move that stitch over to the right knitting needle so that it becomes the last stitch of the round. You can now move the right knitting needle out of your way, as you won’t need it again.

Now this is the really fun step. Bring your needle up from the back of your work, between the first two stitches. Twist it around, and insert it into the next purl stitch as if to knit. If this twisting motion is too difficult or the stitch too tight, you can break this up into 2 parts. First bring the needle all the way up between the two stitches, then insert it into the next stitch as if to knit.

Remaining Stitches

We’re going to repeat those 4 steps from the setup, but instead of moving stitches to the right knitting needle, we’re going to drop them.

Step 1: Insert needle knitwise into next (knit) stitch, and drop that stitch from the knitting needle.

Step 2: Skip next purl st, insert needle purlwise into next knit stitch and pull through.

Insert purlwise -2- Tubular Bind Off tutorial on StitchesNScraps.com

Step 3: Insert needle purlwise into skipped purl stitch and pull through. Drop this stitch from the knitting needle.

Insert purlwise -3 - Tubular Bind Off tutorial on StitchesNScraps.com

Step 4: Bringing needle up from behind, insert it knitwise into next purl stitch and pull through

Insert knitwise from back - Tubular Bind Off tutorial on StitchesNScraps.com

Repeat steps 1-4 until you are left with only 2 stitches on the knitting needle. These will be the first 2 stitches of the round, which you already partially worked through at the beginning. So now, you can just drop them off the knitting needle and your bind off is done!

Knitting with Beads Tutorial on Stitches 'N' Scraps

Tutorial – Knitting with Beads, Using a Crochet Hook

Beads are a fun and easy way to dress up a knitting project. This method of knitting with beads lets you add them as you go, so there’s no need to plan ahead. It’s also useful when working with delicate yarns, or yarns that felt easily.

Choosing beads

Beads come in lots of shapes and sizes. Be sure to choose a bead that has a large enough hole to fit your yarn. Most seed beads will work with lightweight yarns, but if you are using a thicker yarn you may need a bead with a larger hole.

Knitting with Beads Using a Crochet Hook – Photo Tutorial

(scroll down for video tutorial)

For this method, you will need a crochet hook that is small enough to fit inside your bead, but still large enough to grab your yarn. Note that you’ll be placing the bead before knitting the stitch, so the bead will actually end up on the previous row.

  1. Knit up to where you want the bead, then place a bead on your hook.

  2. Using your hook, remove the next stitch from the left needle.

  3. Pull that stitch through the bead. Depending on your yarn and hook, you may find it easier to slide the bead over the stitch instead.

  4. Place the stitch back onto your left needle.

  5. Knit your next stitch as normal. You may need to push the bead down slightly with your fingers to make room for your needle.

Mitered Garter Stitch Washcloth

4-medium
Add this to your Ravelry Queue

Materials:

  • 105-180 yds Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn – shown in Grass
  • Size 6 (4mm) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Yarn needle

Difficulty:

Easy – Basic stitches, but an unusual construction.

Sizes:

Instructions are written for a 9″ square, with changes for a 12″ square in [ ]

Gauge:

 20 sts x 39

rows = 4 inches in garter stitch.

Abbreviations used:

  • k = knit
  • p = purl
  • ssk = slip slip knit (can substitute any left leaning decrease as desired)
  • k2tog = knit two stitches together (can substitute any right leaning decrease as desired)
  • RS = Right Side
  • WS = Wrong Side

Recommended Resources:

Stitch multiples:

  • Any even number of stitches can be cast on, but you will need to adjust the number of rows as well. The total number of rows should be 1 less than the number of stitches cast on.
  • Both squares have a seed stitch border of 5 rows on the top and bottom, and 4 stitches on each side (these are included in the stitch and row counts mentioned above)

Instructions:

Jump ahead to video tutorial

Cast on 45 [61], pm, cast on 45 [61] more. (90 [122] sts)

Seed stitch border (on left and bottom edges):

Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, (k 1, p 1) across to 2 stitches before marker, ssk, sm, k2tog, p1, (k1, p1) across. (88 [120] sts)

Row 2: Sl 1, k 1, (p 1, k 1) across to marker, sm, (k 1, p 1) across.

Row 3: Sl 1, k 1, (p 1, k 1) across to 2 stitches before marker, ssk, sm, k2tog, (k 1, p 1) across. (86 [118] sts)

Row 4: Sl 1, (k 1, p 1) across to marker, sm, p 1, (k 1, p 1) across.

Row 5: Repeat row 1. (84 [116] sts)

Main section of square

Note: The rows in this section start with a 4 stitch, seed stitch border (for the left and top edges) just like we have done in the other squares. Unfortunately that last stitch gets swallowed up by the garter stitch, so these borders will look just a bit smaller than the others. Alternately, you could do 5 stitches of seed stitch, but then these borders will be slightly larger than the others.

Row 6: Sl 1, k 1, p 1, k across to marker, sm, k across to last 3 sts, p 1, k 1, p 1.

Row 7: Sl 1, k 1, p 1, k across to 2 stitches before marker, ssk, sm, k2tog, k across to last 3 sts, p 1, k 1, p 1. (82 [ 114] sts)

Rows 8-80 [112]: Repeat the last 2 rows 36 [52] times, then repeat row 6 once more. (10 sts)

Row 81 [113]: Sl 1, k 1, p 1, ssk, remove marker, k2tog, p 1, k 1, p 1. (8 sts)

Row 82 [114]: Sl 1, k 1, p 1, k 1, (k 1, p 1) twice.

Row 83 [115]: Sl 1, k 1, ssk, k2tog, k 1, p 1. (6 sts)

Row 84 [116]: Sl, k 1, p 2, k 1, p 1.

Row 85 [117]: Sl 1, ssk, k2tog, p 1 (4 sts)

Row 86 [118]: Sl 1, k 2, p 1.

Row 87 [119]: Ssk, k2tog. (2 sts)

Row 88 [120]: Sl 1, p 1.

Row 89 [121]: K2tog.

Bind off last st. Weave in ends.
