Cassiope Bulky Knit Hat Pattern
Relax with a quick and easy, bulky knit hat pattern. With a stretchy, reversible, all-over, moss stitch texture, Cassiope is one of those favorite patterns you’ll reach for again and again. Start with a simple, long-tail cast on, or try the provisional, tubular cast-on. Adjust the length as desired to wear it with or without the fold-up brim. With 7 sizes, from preemie to adult large, you can make one for everyone!

Cascade 220 Superwash Grande Yarn
Cascade provided the 220 Superwash Grande yarn for this bulky knit hat design. Superwash merino is one of my favorite fibers to work with. It’s delightfully soft and squishy, and also smooth and easy to care for.

220 Superwash Grande comes in a giant, 200g skein, enough for any size of this hat. Just like the other yarns in the 220 line, there are loads of scrumptious colors to choose from too!
2025 Two of a Kind Hat and Scarf KAL
This bulky knit hat pattern is part of the Two of a Kind Hat and Scarf Knit Along, which I am co-hosting with Marie from Underground Crafter. This is my final pattern for the event, which included 6 hats and 6 scarves, throughout the year. Each hat and scarf pair used the same yarn, but I designed one, and Marie designed the other. Get all the details and other patterns in the main KAL post.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Marie’s coordinating scarf design has been delayed (potentially for quite a while). When it becomes available, I will share it here.
Provisional Tubular Cast-On
This cast on may seem intimidating but it’s actually the easiest tubular cast-on method I’ve seen, and a little like magic. It starts with a provisional cast on, but thanks to a clever trick of yarn overs in the first row, there’s no picking up of stitches involved at all. The yarn overs rest between cast-on stitches, acting just like the picked-up stitches normally would. That means, after you get a few rows in, you can remove the waste yarn from the provisional cast-on and there are no live stitches to worry about!
For the initial cast-on with waste yarn, you can use any cast-on method you prefer. The crochet cast-on is the easiest to use, because it’s the easiest to take out later. But if you don’t like that cast-on, feel free to use a different one!
I’m working on a tutorial for the Provisional Tubular Cast-on, and will add a link here once it’s ready.
Why Cassiope?
Cassiope is a genus of moss heather plants. They are evergreens with beautiful, bell-shaped blooms. The ridges in the leaves remind me of the moss stitch pattern in this hat. The name is derived from Cassiopea, the mother of Andromeda in Greek mythology. As the genus of plants, it’s pronounced like Calliope but with the s sound in the middle (at least according to Merriam Webster).
