CAL Central Holiday Stashdown Crochet Along
This phone holder crochet pattern is my design for the 2025 Holiday Stashdown Crochet Along (CAL) at CAL Central. We’ve been doing this annual CAL for 11 years now, and it’s always our most popular one!
Join in the fun on the Facebook Group. See the main post for the full schedule, other patterns, and giveaway information too!
The Long and Short of it
The pattern includes a short option (pictured) and a long option (not pictured) that you can wear over 1 shoulder or across your body. The basic structure is the same, but the long option is double the overall length, with a much longer opening.
Lion Brand Color Theory Yarn
For my Add-A-Pocket phone holder, I used some Lion Brand Two of Wands Color Theory yarn from my stash. Lion Brand had originally given me this yarn for free to use for another project. It’s a silky smooth, acrylic yarn with a lovely range of neutral colors. For my holder, I used 124AD Nutmeg and 122X Bone

Seam Options
The final row of the phone holder crochet pattern is a seaming row. Each stitch in the row is connected at the bottom as normal, but also at the top, to the opposite side of the work. The result is a seam that matches the starting edge fairly closely. Alternate instructions are given if you prefer a different seam.

Special Stitches
Foundation Single Crochet (fsc):
First fsc: Ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Remaining fsc: Insert hook in ch at base of previous st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 1 loop on hook (base ch made), yo and pull through 2 loops on hook (sc made).
This is a method of creating foundation chains and single crochet stitches at the same time. See full tutorial here.

Joining Single Crochet (joining sc): Insert hook in ch at base of previous st and in blo of indicated st at same time, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops on hook.

Please note: The colors are reversed in this picture (it was an earlier iteration of the pattern)
This method is used to work the next sc after a series of foundation single crochet. It closes the gap that would otherwise be created between the base of the foundation stitches and the base of the next sc worked.
Pattern Notes
The bottom of the Foundation Row has the same “V” shapes as the top of the row, made up of a back loop and a front loop. In Rnd 1, when indicated, work into these in the same way as you would work into the tops of stitches.
Except for the foundation and seaming rows, the phone holder is worked in turned rounds, Change colors in the joining slip stitches where indicated by using the new color to work the slip stitch. Drop the previous color at the back of the work, to be picked up again on the following round.
The pattern is reversible. The right side is indicated only for reference when seaming. Either side can be the right or wrong side.
Instructions
First Side
Foundation Row: With A, work 52 [104] fsc (see Special Stitches)
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, turn, sc in blo of each st across, rotate to work in bottom of Foundation Row, sc in blo of each st across, join and change to B with sl st in first st.
Rnd 2: With B, ch 1, turn, sc in blo of each st around, join and change to A with sl st in first st.
Rnd 3: With A, ch 1, turn, sc in blo of each st around, join and change to B with sl st in first st.
Rnds 4-5: Rep Rnds 2-3.
Opening
Rnd 6: With B, ch 1, turn, sc in first 22 sts, *work 22 [74] fsc, sk next 22 [74] sts, joining sc (see Special Stitches) in next st**, sc in next 15 sts; rep from * to **, sc in last 21 sts, join and change to A with sl st in next st.
2nd Side
Rnd 7: Rep rnd 3.
Rnds 8-9: Rep Rnds 2-3. Fasten off A.
Rnd 10: Rep rnd 3, do not join or change colors at end of rnd.
If you prefer a different seaming method, instead of Seaming Row, work a final row of sc in first 52 [104] sts only, fasten off, and seam edges together using your preferred method.
Seaming Row (RS): With B, ch 1, turn, hold work flat so that last 52 [104] sts line up behind first 52 [104] sts, forming a front layer and back layer. Remove working loop from hook, insert hook in flo of first back layer st, place loop back on hook and pull through, sc in blo of first front layer st, *remove loop from hook, insert hook in flo of next back layer st, place loop on hook and pull through,** sc in blo of next front layer st; rep from * across, ending at ** when one st remains on front layer, sl st in last st, fasten off.

Weave in all ends.
Slide phone into pocket through opening and wear, carry, or hang as desired.
