What is Tangi?
Google’s Area 120 provides teams of Google employees the resources to create and try out new ideas. Tangi is a new, social media, video platform created by one of these teams. The web address for Tangi is Tangi.co – Note that it’s .co and not .com.
I joined this platform as a creator early in 2020, when it was first starting out. Now that it’s been a few months, they’ve invited me to share my experiences with you.
1 Minute Craft and DIY Videos
The videos on Tangi are no more than 1 minute long. That may not seem like a long time, but it’s usually enough to show a brief overview of a project. Here’s one of my videos that shows how to make your own butter from cream.
My normal tutorials tend to be much longer, because I like to share great detail about the whys and hows of everything I’m showing you. That’s great if you want an in depth analysis, but sometimes you just want to quickly see how to do a particular technique.
Creating videos for Tangi forces me to distill those long tutorials down to just the absolute necessities. Many of the videos on Tangi (including most of mine) link back to longer tutorials or videos or posts, so that you can delve more in depth into a topic if you want to. For example, here’s a quick Tangi version of how to make a pom pom.
Carefully Curated Content
This, to me, is the key difference between Tangi and other video platforms. It’s not a “free for all” where anyone can post videos. At least for now, only approved Tangi creators can submit videos. In addition, the Tangi team currently approves each new video before publishing it.
The direct moderation means all you see are high quality videos with craft and DIY content! This method may change over time, as the platform grows. From what I’ve seen so far, the team is committed to maintaining the quality of the content on the platform and I hope that will continue.
Exclusive Videos
Some of these 1 minute videos are also shared on other platforms, but some are exclusive just to Tangi! These are marked with a banner showing that they are exclusive. Here’s one of mine, on how to crochet without a slip knot.
Craft and DIY Categories
Tangi focuses specifically on videos that teach or inspire. As of now, they’re divided into 7 categories: Art, Beauty, Cook, DIY, Decor, Lifestyle, and Parents.
Each category has several sub categories. You’ll find the knit and crochet videos under “DIY – Yarn”
Made for Mobile
With its vertical videos, Tangi looks great on both computers and mobile devices. The user friendly Tangi app is available from and . You can browse the videos without setting up an account. Creating a free account will allow you to save your favorites and leave comments as well.
I hope you’ll check out this new platform, and come find me there!
