New Socks!

I’ve been neglecting my sock knitting horribly, but with a little bit here and a little bit there, I finally have a new pair of socks!

A new pair of socks for me!

They are made with Fingerpaints, by Cherry Tree Hill, in the Cider House colorway, which I had received in a Yarnbox package last May.  This yarn is amazing!

It’s 100% superwash merino that’s tightly twisted, giving it a springy, almost elastic feel, which makes for a nicely stretchy sock. It’s smooth on the needles and can be ripped out without fraying, pilling, or splitting. Then of course, there’s the colors! I love the constrasting stripes of color against the red background. What I particularly love though, is the red background isn’t solid – it’s actually 3 different shades of red, all blending into each other!

The bottom line is, this yarn produced socks that are soft, comfortable, and pretty. I love everything about it and would have loved to get more, once I have a little room in my stash. Unfortunately, it seems to be discontinued.

They do have a new yarn called Supersock Select, which looks like it might be almost the same, so I may give that a try. It also comes in new “broad band” colorways with wide stripes of color…those look interesting!

I worked the socks 2 at a time on size 2.25mm (size 1) needles (my Addi Sock Rockets). To really show off the yarn, they are basic stockinette all the way up to the ankle. I then switched to 2 x 2 ribbing for most of the cuff to make it nice and stretchy. I wanted to use up all the remaining yarn, but I wanted to make sure I saved enough for the heels. So when I was getting near the end, I stopped and used the other end of the ball to put in the afterthought heels.

The afterthought heel has become my favorite, and it works really well with striping socks. When the heels were done, I continued knitting the rest of the cuff until I completely ran out of yarn – I actually forgot to leave enough for the bind off and had to tink the last row.

For those of you who may be thinking these socks look familiar, no this is not the same pair that I finished back in January for my husband. The Yarnbox came with 2 generous skeins of 420 yds each – more than enough for two pairs! My hubbys socks have a textured instep and cuff, with only an inch of ribbing, and the heel decreases are slightly different – so no fear about telling them apart! These are his:

Now it’s time to cast on a new pair (yay!) – maybe something not so vanilla. I’ve developed quite a stash of sock yarns; I wonder which one I should use next…hmmm….
