Tutorial – Needlepoint Knit Stitches

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you know I’ve been working on a needlepoint project on plastic canvas for some time now. I’m using a variety of different stitches for the project, including one that looks like knit stitches.

The project:

I have an Amish / tabletop swift from ChiaoGoo that I love and use all the time. It comes apart in pieces, which I have been storing in their original box.

After a couple years of regular use, that box is completely falling apart. So I decided to make a new box out of plastic canvas, and am having fun covering it in different textures with needlepoint.

Knit stitches:

I created these just like I would do a duplicate stitch on a knit fabric. For each “knit” stitch, I brought the yarn up at point A, down at B, up at C, and then back down at A again. Then I repeated that process for the remaining stitches.

I first used a light blue yarn and alternated the stitches for a staggered appearance. At the edges, I made shorter stitches to fill in the gaps

Then I went over it again with a variegated yarn, working in the remaining open spots between the “knit” stitches.

The end result is speckles of color on a blue background, as though I had alternated between the two yarns while knitting it.

I still have quite a way to go on this project but sometime soon I’ll show you how I made the “granny squares” on the larger pieces!
